A River Ramble
The Genesee River is born high in the hills of northwestern Pennsylvania and flows northward across western New York to Lake Ontario near Rochester. Its valley divides the eastern-flowing watershed of the Susquehanna River from the western-flowing tributaries of the Allegheny, and links the historically dominant northern tier of upstate New York and the more rural Southern Tier. These photos show some of my favorite Genesee Country places.
"A River Ramble: Saga of the Genesee Valley" was the title of a short book of historical stories written by Rochester Democrat and Chronicle columnist Arch Merrill and published by the Gannett Company in 1945.
